Conduct a session on map reading, covering symbols, contour lines, scales and legend interpretation
Guide participants in identifying key features on the map and understanding how to read elevation changes.
Compass familiarization
Demonstrate the parts of a compass and their functions
Teach participants how to take bearings, and follow a direction using the compass
Walk “compass marches”
Combined Exercise - Map and compass Basics
Pair participants and provide each pair with a map, compass and a set of waypoints
In a controlled area, have participants practice taking bearings, following directions and navigating to waypoints.
Outdoor navigation challenge
Move the activity to a more expansive outdoor area of your choosing
Participants, now equipped with the basics, navigate a predefined route using their maps and compasses. Optional waypoints can be marked on beforehand
Encourage participants to collaborate and problem solve as they encounter various terrain challenges
Make participants compete (optional)
Many find it more engaging to learn during friendly competition. You can place out predetermined posts for the pairs to find. You, the facilitator, hold a map with all the coordinates and hand them out to one group at the time. Their assignment is to find X amount of posts in for instance 30 minutes. The group that find more posts win in the end.

Risiken und Empfehlungen
Risks: Uneven terrain, steep slopes or dense vegetation may pose physical challenges
Recommendation: Choose an outdoor area you know well, and is suited for the skill level of the participants. Brief them on terrain on beforehand nand encourage cautious movement in exposed terrain
Risk: Unpredictable weather conditions such as rain and fog
Recommendations: Monitor weather forecasts and make adjustments if adverse conditions are expected. Make sure participants are appropriately dressed for weather.
Risk: participants may make navigation errors, leading to getting “lost” or taking unintended routes.
Recommendation: Provide thorough instructions on map and compass. Have a backup-plan, and consider having gps devices or phones available incase of emergency situations. Supervise participants , especially in challenging terrain
